The
instant we recognize we are in the present, the moment slips into the
past. As this passage of time carries us through our lives we are
barely aware it is happening. Yet how often we ask, "Where did the
time go?" Photography captures these moments just before they are gone.
The images in Time & Again record exactly
the same place in two different time periods. One, present day; bold,
colorful, and recognizable. The other, somewhere in the past; faded,
monochrome, and unfamiliar. The past image, printed on sheer silk hangs
in front of the present image on cotton, allowing the viewer to
literally see through the past into the same scene today.
I
often find myself trying to imagine my surroundings in different time
periods, and my work in photo restoration takes me back to these lost
eras. This was the inspiration for the images in Time & Again. They
remind us that time is both fleeting and powerful. It slips away before
we can hold it yet leaves its mark with a memory. |
